Riley’s Diagnosis

I took Riley to the vet this morning and I could tell she wasn’t feeling well still…she wasn’t half as crazy/embarrassing as she usually is at the vet.  If you missed yesterday’s post about her pain, here it is:  Riley’s Pain.

Her wonderful vet, Dr. Hall, said she thinks she may have a soft tissue injury like a sprain in her back.  She gave Riley Previcox (an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever) and Robaxin (a muscle relaxer/pain reliever) to take.  Riley will have to be on crate rest (AGAIN!) for a week.  One week is MUCH more manageable than 8 weeks!!  No problemo there…we can handle a week.

If she’s not better by next week, they’ll take an X-ray to make sure it isn’t a disc in her spine causing the problem, but that’s not very common in larger dogs or Australian Cattle Dogs, thankfully.  So hopefully she’ll be better by next week.  If she gets worse or starts to drag her hind legs or has trouble urinating that I should call them.

Dr. Hall said her hips and knees felt good, so that it’s more likely to be her back.  Of course, as she was palpating her spine, Riley was stoic and didn’t yelp…even though she yelped last night when I petted her back.  I guess the adrenaline from being at the vet kicked in and took most of the pain away.  She said the way she was holding up her left leg on Saturday, then her right leg on Sunday sounded like it was a back problem.

Riley is going to be the million dollar dog pretty soon!  I think she goes to the doctor more than I do!  I know for a fact that she’s had more X-rays in her 4 year life than I have in my 26 year life…and I was an accident prone/sports playing kid!  Poor girl.

So I dragged out the crate and Riley is resting in there, watching the world go on around her.  Hopefully her meds are making her feel better already.

  1. I just saw the post about Riley's pain – yikes!I hope her week of crate rest helps. You are right, should be a breeze for both of you – and since she isn't feeling that great, I'm guessing she isn't going to mind a whole lot.Yeah, my last cattle dog mix Shadow was like Riley at the vet – I'd bring her in because she could barely walk and was in obvious pain at home, but her adrenalin would be going full speed at the vet and she looked normal. That's when x-rays helped, so I didn't feel like a complete moron bring her in since she obviously had some degeneration in her back and hips. Thanks for keeping us posted and here's to hoping those drugs help! πŸ™‚

  7. Well, it looks like your Mom was on to something when she said it was her back and not her leg. We are glad the vet saw her and gave you some meds. Hopefully that rest will help. Ciara badly sprained one of her legs during the winter and it took a very long time for it to fully heal. All paws crossed.Woos – Phantom, Thunder, Ciara, and Lightning

  11. Oh Riley, sure hope you feel better soon.it is tough being a happy active dog and loving to run, play, and jump. I just got off my last crate rest and was feeling SO good I played with a foster dog. It was fun ..then.. Ouch. Back to the leash and ice on my knee. Mom is watching me like an eagle again…:-(.
