Riley, the Scaredy-Dog!

It is thunder storming here today, so of course, my oh-so-brave dog is scared to death.  She likes to go in our downstairs powder room (with no windows–smart dog!) and try to dig her way to China through the floor.  I caught her on video.  Unfortunately, our Thundershirt didn’t really live up to our expectations and doesn’t really help.  Some calming tablets from Pet Naturals of Vermont help, but it takes about 30 minutes for them to kick in.

  1. Oh my gosh – poor thing! I am so glad B doesn't get freaked out by storms. My last cattle dog mix did – and she'd hide in the shower. Once she lost her hearing due to old age – she wasn't bothered by them anymore, so that was sort of a blessing in disguise.I hope you find something to make storms more tolerable for her! 🙂

  3. She better hope grandpa doesn't see this video of her scratching the floor! 😉 Thank goodness the calming tablet kicked in and she settled down.Riley's grandma

  5. Our Min Pin, Serena, used to do that her entire life. Our carpet behind the sofa is evidence of that. Now that she's in Heaven, I'm glad to see that patch of worn carpet.Thundershirts didn't work for Rusty or Annie either. But Annie just hides under the bed and Rusty runs for his crate. So all is well.

  7. My anti water dog totally surprised me today and went out back into the water behind the house. I think his curiosity got the better of him and he couldn't help himself. He went out in the rain a total of three times. I think the reservoir coming up to the back gate brought some new smells he couldn't resist. Plus the geese could swim by the backyard…

  9. We tried a combination of Thundershirt and Melatonin with pretty good results. The Melatonin is a natural remedy that puts them to sleep. I hope you find something that can help her to at least make storms bearable.

  11. Poor Riley, thunderstorms can be so tough. My childhood dog had the same problem. She would rush into my parents' bedroom and hide under the bed. It was so hard to see.I am glad the calming treats work, even if they take some time to kick in. Hopefully you will eventually find something that puts her more at ease.

  13. Pooor Riley! Kol isn't the biggest fan of storms either, though it's gotten a lot better! We've created a "black out area" in our basement with foam insulation (great for blocking noise) and black out drapes to hide the thunder that Koly can hang out in if the storm is too intense for him.

  17. Aww poor Riley. I know just how she feels. I run for my shower storm bunker when the boomies start too! Mom gives me an herbal supplement called Composure that takes the edge off so I don't pant or shake. I still go to my bunker which Mom says is fine 🙂 And yap, Mom has to pay attention to the radar so she can give me my Composure at least 30 minutes before the boomies start. Waggin at ya,Roo
